MR & MRS EDWIN NAINBY
Mr. Nainby was Alford's photographer, who commenced business in the early 1880's. He used a
very large camera with a massive lens of 18" focal length which used plates 10" x 8". For his
appointments in the area he travelled in his pony and trap. After his death, he was succeeded by
his wife, who eventually handed the business over to her son Alfred. He was reputed to be of a
nervous disposition, it is said that he bought a Model T Ford which he wrecked, and that it caused
him great expense and worry. Whatever the reason, he died young, in 1945, after which the
business ceased. A great many negatives were sold by auction in Alford market and were
dispersed around the county. Many came to a sad end, including some which were used as
chicken house windows, fortunately William Hallgarth rescued many from their unlikely resting
places, and after his death, his photographic collection was transferred to the Welholme Gallery
in Grimsby, where they now form the Hallgarth Collection. In this book we have used a large
number of photographs from this collection, and we are very grateful for the opportunity to do so.

THE NAINBY FAMILY
In 'Alford Town' we wrote about the Nainbys; as we are preparing to go to print again, Alford has
been visited by the grandson of Edwin Nainby, Russell Noble. Mr.Noble is the only child of
Nainby's daughter Ada who married Basil Noble of Grimsby, and his cousin, Ted Nainby, is one of
the few surviving male Nainbys, living in Nottingham. The Nainby family lived in Gedney in the
1830's, and Edwin Nainby, born in 1842, married Jane Starbuck, the daugher of the Starbuck
photography family of Boston, ultimately taking over Starbuck's shop in Alford.

Mr.Noble would like to learn more about any surviving relatives of the Nainbys, and any
information sent to the authors will be forwarded to him.

John named his benficiaries as being his daughters Susannah, Mary
Jane - the wife of Edwin Nainby, Emma - the wife of Charles Shepherd
Smyth and Clara who was to inherit the props of the photographic
business, His son John Bissel and his unnamed wife are also
mentioned.

So where does John fit in to the jig-saw of Starbucks ? I have found his
birthplace in Suffolk entered in the I.G.I the only Starbuck baptism in
the county along with the only marriage entry(that is shown) - which is
that of his parents. But what of his father, from where has he travelled
to marry his Suffolk bride I cannot tell but I have found a few of his
descendents as shown below and as people usually return to the area
they are from one can suppose that he has done so as well -

A DNA test taken by a male descendent with the Starbuck name could verify the origins of this family
