Genetics

It is reassuring to see that there have been a variety of causes of death in my family and not one
single desease has had precedence going by the evidence on the surface of this small sample. This
is indeed not a good indicator of a genetic influence at all. Occupational hazards played their part as
in the stonemason and wife dying of T.B. and accidents such as the dairyman being kicked by a cow.
Which organ had failed one when it was declared one had died of old age, a cause of death which was
often given in the past and seems to be less often used nowadays. Dying of a diseased liver, was
this an inherited weakness or the way of life of the individual. In this case I happen to know that
that ancestor lived behind a beer shop and tended to the draycart horses. My grandfather who died
of gangrene - that resulted as a matter of chance due to catching a dose of flu, if he had not, his
downward spiral may not have happened quite so soon in life - what ageing process would he have
died from further down the years. From this very small venture I reached the conclusion that our
choice of occupation, way of living and pure chance, which includes into which century, medical
advances or not, plays a bigger part in the way we will be leaving life than genetics - but this
assumption is by looking at my direct ancestors.

Looking at my mothers siblings however, shows a distinct family predisposition to hardening of the
arteries - heart desease and strokes, and gangrene appears in a third generation - an ever present
threat in spite of medical advances against infection.
