In spite of being a London family, I had a feeling that the Walker family roots may
have been in Scotland due to a first name of Alexander and the fact that Scottish Chapels were used for baptisms in some cases, and now with a great deal of luck that does prove to be so, and from the horses mouth. One of my husbands direct ancestors spoke his family connection with Scotland during a series of lectures that he gave, all of which can be found from following the link on the Walker Tree. However, before this was discovered the possibilities of DNA testing had arisen to raise my hopes of making a breakthrough, as often happens in life - eventually something turns up and in this case under the banner of science, DNA had come to the rescue in the form of DNA testing for genealogical reasons.
I duly joined my fellow family searchers in this latest venture to hit the genealogy
world and sent for the kit of cotton bud and specimen tube. A cheek scrape and it was sent winging its way back across the Atlantic oceon to the laboratory in the U.S.
I was convinced that Walkers would be flocking around in no time to help flesh
out the Walker Tree, afterall lets face it, they are hardly to be described as thin on the ground, there must be thousands (millions ?) of them around the world and many would come to the same conclusion as I did - to DNA it - to make sure the Walkers found were the right Walkers and not those kind that turn into a broken branch or crashing trunk as the whole edifice of a built up family comes tumbling down - with other peoples Walkers.
With great satisfaction I viewed the various numbers that added up to a Walker
map of my husband, noted them down and logged on to see all those Walkers just waiting for me to say Hello - and oh dear ! and you will have guessed from my previous enthusiasm that I was heading, and just asking, for a fall, the lines of numbers which make sense to the science world but just mean (HOPE) in capital letters for some of the rest of us - the denouement was thus -
No 37 marker Walkers,
(well yes that would have been stretching hope too far, perhaps a handful at the
25 marker stage would be good) -
No 25 markers either - oh !
(right, ok bound to be some for the 12 marker stage, everyone is in that grouping,
aren't they ?
No 12 markers ! really, cannot believe this and did a lot of clicking and checking
and - well just staring at it but could not conjure up even one person with the Walker dna eager to find me and mine (well, my husbands really, but mine by adoption)
So all of you out there with floating DNA ancestors without a home - take a look
at my numbers and compare with yours - you never know, miracles do happen - just like DNA. |
