Notes for George Hale:

Veteran of Waterloo and Peninsula Wars - with the rank of Lieutenant he was lucky to
survive with just a wrist wound.

George arrived in Hobart, Tasmania with his wife Ann and children in 1833 - on the
ship 'Lady East'. He of course knew that he was taking his family to a convict
settlement but presumerably he felt he was doing the best for his childrens future. What
was his intent in going there - being an ex military man he was possibly taking up a
position connected with the control of the convict colony. One wonders what his
reaction was to three of his daughters marrying ex convicts.

An Ancestor was Sir Matthew Hale who was a Chief Justice of the Kings Bench when
Charles the first was on the throne followed by Cromwell. The last Chief Justice to
sentence a woman to be hanged as a witch he defended Archbishop Laud at his
impeachement in 1643.

Sir Matthew Hale's parents were Robert Hale and Joan Poyntz - her maiden name links
back to the de Ponz of Normany who in the reign of Henry VII were the owners of
Alderley Manor. Sir Robert was later in about 1665 able to acquire the Manor of
Alderley including the partronage and living of Alderley Church which Queen Elizabeth
had given to the Poyntz Family.

On Matthews grandmothers side the Crewe family employed many weavers of the
Cotswold villages and towns and exported their english woollen cloth to many countries
as it was renowned for its quality and fetched very high prices.

His grandfather was Robert Hale who had married Alice Crewe in 1570 and he
financially supported the Royal Aid in 1588 for defence against the Spanish Armada.
