Death of a Campden Celebrity

The death occurred at Shipston on Stour infirmary on Thursday last of Charles Blakeman, better known to many as "Slap". The deceased was in his 69th year, was born in Campden, where he lived all his life, and for many years carried on the business of a horse breaker. In his early days he did so on a rather extensive scale, and used to frequently say that he had broke horses for most of the "Lords", Clergymen and gentlemen in the district. He was exceptionally good at his job, and during his career successfully mastered that which had been tried and given up as a bad job by the other horse breakers.

He often related that at one time or another he had broken nearly every bone in his body and had seen more of the "ups and downs" of life than most people. With the advent of motor cars and infirmities prematurely caused by the life of his occupation, he found his occupation gone. In his day no man in his particular way was better known in the surrounding towns, markets etc., for many miles around. He was quite a character, very original, and a very shrewd judge of horses.

Although he suffered with a speech impediment, he was exceptionally ready witted, and no matter who addressed him, he was always ready with a pithy reply. Many of his original retorts were "real gems". Some years ago when following his occupation, he was driving a not too travelable animal through Bretforton in none too safe a manner. This caught the eye of the vigilant resident constable, and he procured his bicycle and went in pursuit. About a mile out of the village he came across Blakeman lying in the road bleeding from a cut in the head, and the horse attached to the braker quietly grazing on the roadside. The officer, thinking that some worthy host had been straining the licensing laws, picked Blakeman up and asked him "where he had stopped last". In his ever ready way, and pointing to the blood on the road and replied "any man with his eyes open could see without asking such a question".

The deceased was a widower and leaves no family. This familiar figure and amusing character in Campden will be missed, and no one can truly say of him that a life "without incident" has ended. The funeral takes place in Campden on Saturday.
