The English surname Welborn is of local origin, being of that category of surnames derived from the
place where the original bearer once lived or held land. In this instance, the name simply denotes one
who is a native of one of the several towns of this name in England, such as Welborne in Norfolk,
Welbourn in Lincolnshire and Welburn in Yorkshire. The place name itself is derived from a
combination of two Old English terms, "wella" meaning "well spring" and "burna" meaning "Rivulet",
and it would have been used to refer to a town which grew up by a stream which flowed from a spring.
Such a location would have been of great importance in former times when natural wells and rivers were
the only water source. Indeed, the location of the ancient city of Troy was solely determined by the
presence of a natural spring in the vicinity.

References to this name in written records first occur in the twelfth century, when the "Records of the
Templars in England" make mention of one Ailmer de Welleburnia, residing in Lincolnshire in 1185.
Later, the "Hundred Rolls" for 1273 note a Hugh de Welleburn, a native of the same county.
Documented variants of this name include Wellbourn, Welbourne, Welbun and Welburn, and its bearers
are chiefly numerous along the eastern coast of England.
