Elizabeth Ann Newton was born in
Grantham in 1846 - the daughter
of Stephen Newton -a cordwainer
and Elizabeth Porter,who was a
Dressmaker. Elizabeth was their
second child having been preceeded
by her brother Stephen and followed
by Edward and Jane. Her father
Stephen, being named on her wedding
certificate led to finding Elizabeth
and her parents living in Wharf Road
in Spittlegate in the 1851 census as shown below Wharf Road was also where her future
husband was spending his childhood. Could they have been childhood sweethearts perhaps.

Elizabeth married William Millhouse, a stonemason, on the 19th May 1867 at St.Wulframs in
Grantham. They had a family of three children, they lived in Chester for some years while
William was involved with work on Chester Cathedral. They lost their only son from Scarlet
Fever at the age of 7 years. Elizabeth was widowed in 1880 by consumption and she herself
succumbed to the same desease just two years later at the age of 36. Briefly having been
married for a second time just before her death. Her orphaned daughters, my grandmother
Alice and my great aunt Sarah were taken in by Millhouse relatives and then sent into service.
