Harry was apprenticed to be a Church
Organ pipemaker, following which he
became a journeyman. He started up his
own business in Newcastle later. He was
a good sportsmand and he won cups for
Rowing and Boxing, the latter being
disapproved of by his wifes parents. He
had a lively personality and many friends
in the pubs.

Harry Charles left school at the age of 14yrs and
joined his Fathers business as an apprentice. When
the 1st world war broke out he volunteered for the
Army at 18yrs and served in the front line on the
Somme battlefield until he was wounded and
discharged in 1917. After recuperating at his sister
Kate's farm his father became ill and he was
persuaded to return to the family business until the
2nd W.War broke out when he was recruited into
wartime factory work. After the war he re-started
the Organ Pipe business in the midlands which
proved difficult but was ultimately successful. Harry
was a small man in both height and girth - liked
sport, a bet on the horses and had a fine baritone
singing voice. From the age of 40 + he began to be
afflicted with deafness becoming almost totally deaf
by the end of his life.
